A superb old single cask Macduff, distilled in May 1997 and bottled by Douglas Laing in January 2023 for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.

Matured for 25 years in refill hogshead DL17100, this Highland single malt was bottled at its natural cask strength of 52.5%, with no added colouring or chill-filtration. Just 280 bottles were filled from the cask.

Macduff Distillery was established in the early 1960s on the banks of the River Deveron, close to the coastal town of the same name. Much of its output has traditionally been destined for blended Scotch whisky, while official single malt releases generally appear under the Glen Deveron name. As a result, independently bottled single casks carrying the Macduff distillery name offer an interesting opportunity to explore the spirit outside its usual presentation, particularly at this sort of advanced age.

Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe honey-glazed fruits and a gentle spiciness on the nose, with the palate becoming full of citrus and mint before developing a long finish of barley spice, cinnamon and puff pastry.
