A superb old single cask Laphroaig, distilled in October 1997 and bottled by Douglas Laing in September 2023 at 25 years old for the prestigious XOP Black Series.

Matured for a quarter of a century in a refill hogshead, cask DL17742 yielded just 167 bottles at a natural cask strength of 56.4%. As with Douglas Laing's XOP releases, the whisky was bottled without colouring or chill-filtration.

The late 1990s are a particularly interesting period for Laphroaig, and well-aged independent bottlings from this era have become increasingly difficult to find. The long maturation in a refill hogshead is especially appealing here, allowing Laphroaig's famously medicinal, maritime and heavily peated distillery character to develop over 25 years without being overwhelmed by an active cask.

Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe damp peat and iodine amongst leather and fudge, leading to liquorice, chimney soot and chocolate on the palate, with a finish of spices and burnt sugar.
