La Medida Mezcal Tobala

La Medida Mezcal Tobala is a wild-varietal artisanal mezcal from the La Medida brand led by Julián Vidal Gómez Rodríguez — an unsung icon of Oaxacan mezcal for 40+ years, working with mezcaleros across multiple Oaxacan producer communities. Tobala (Agave potatorum) is a small, wild high-altitude agave varietal prized for the delicate, refined, and mineral-driven mezcal it produces.

Tobala grows wild in the higher Oaxacan elevations and is much smaller than Espadin — it takes longer to mature, produces less juice, and is considerably more expensive and rare in finished mezcal. The character is consistently more elegant and complex, with mineral and floral notes. La Medida’s artisanal production approach captures the varietal’s distinctive character.
