A superb single cask Bowmore, distilled in September 2001 and matured for 21 years in a refill sherry butt before being bottled by Douglas Laing in December 2022 for their prestigious Xtra Old Particular (XOP) range.

Cask DL16464 yielded just 514 hand-filled bottles at a natural cask strength of 51.6% ABV, with no colouring or chill-filtration. This is Bottle No. 001, making it a particularly appealing example. This cask was bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange.

Bowmore from this period has become increasingly sought after, particularly well-aged examples matured in sherry casks. Here, more than two decades in a refill sherry butt should allow Bowmore's characteristic maritime, smoky character to remain prominent alongside the influence of the sherry wood.

Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe stewed fruits, fallen pears and red apples alongside new leather and wet oak on the nose. The palate provides a sherried Islay quality with cured meat, blackcurrants and a rosemary jus, while the finish is long with beautifully salty brine, gentle peat and a big fruity finale.
