A superb old Bowmore bottled by Douglas Laing for the prestigious Xtra Old Particular Black Series. Distilled in November 1996, this Islay single malt was matured for 25 years before being bottled in February 2022.

The whisky was finished in a refill hogshead, with single cask DL15472 yielding just 276 bottles. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 53.7%, it was released without colouring or chill filtration.

Douglas Laing's XOP Black Series is reserved for particularly rare and aged single casks selected from the company's stocks. Each release is individually numbered and presented in the distinctive Black Series packaging, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Fred Hamilton Laing and Director of Whisky Cara Laing.

Bowmore is one of Islay's oldest working distilleries, with a history dating back to 1779. The distillery retains its own traditional floor maltings and is particularly well known for the combination of maritime peat smoke and fruit found in its spirit.

Douglas Laing's tasting notes describe “Hello Islay” on the nose, with smoked bacon crisps, peated barley, damp wood and bonfire embers. The palate is thick, oily and mouthcoating, with seaweed and chewed leather balanced by a caramel creaminess. The finish lingers SO long with most of what has gone before.

Bowmore distilled in 1996 has become particularly popular, with a number of independently bottled casks from this vintage earning an excellent reputation. These casks are often prized for showing the fruitier side of Bowmore alongside the distillery's characteristic coastal smoke, and the vintage has consequently developed something of a following among collectors and drinkers.
